Can you use Apple's AirTag to track pets?
In short, we think Apple's AirTag, with sophisticated built-in technology, is absolutely perfect for keeping track of pets. We are so convinced, that we have announced our latest accessory to support this exact use case. Meet the DogTag.
The DogTag accessory is manufactured in a durable, unibody moulded high performance elastomer, the DogTag allows an AirTag to securely socket in, and wraps around most standard collars.
When your furry friend is hiding, you can use the build in 'Ping it. Find it.' function to play a tone on the AirTag and locate their latest hiding spot. You could even train them to respond to the 'ping' sound with various actions. Simpler yet, you can do this all through Siri and say something like 'Hey Siri, find Buffy'. This will activate the sound that you can follow right to your pet, and your search is over.
If they've wandered a little further away you can use 'Precision Finding' to see distance and direction to the AirTag. Precision Finding is available on iPhone 11 or later models.
And if they've explored well beyond their usual territory, you're in good shape to find them thanks to the way AirTags use the millions of iPhone, iPad and Mac devices around the world. Your AirTag will send out a secure Bluetooth signal that can be detected by nearby devices in the Find My network. These devices will send the location of your AirTag to iCloud, then you can go to the Find My app and see it on the map.
Lost Mode takes this a step further and allows any NFC enabled smartphone to extract the contact information that you assign to the tag.
Given the above powerful functionality you might think you'll be changing batteries every few weeks. Amazingly, the AirTag has a battery life of around one year, and accepts standard button cell batteries for when it's time to replace it.
And lastly, we all know how much our pets love finding the nearest puddle. Luckily, the AirTag is splash, water and dust resistant with a rating of IP67. This means it can be submerged at a depth of up to one meter for 30 minutes without getting damaged.
